Oh ya, it is configured to usb. In fact, before I emailed, I went in
and redid the configuration just to make sure.

Before:
T:  Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#=  1 Spd=12  MxCh= 2
B:  Alloc=  0/900 us ( 0%), #Int=  0, #Iso=  0

Just FYI, lsmod yields:
usb-storage            73696   0 (unused)
visor                  10668   0 (unused)
usbserial              21660   0 [visor]
usb-uhci               25772   0 (unused)
usbcore                76608   1 [usb-storage visor usbserial usb-uhci]

I double checked the permissions after I blacklisted them and they
stayed the same. I'll go back to the old configuration and see if that
helps any. If it does, I'll try to figure out what's different.

The gpilotd configuration file yields:
[General]
sync_PC_Id=542352833
progress_stepping=1
num_devices=1
num_pilots=1

[Device0]
type=1
name=Cradle
device=/dev/palm
speed=115200
timeout=4

[Pilot0]
name=MyPilot
pilotid=501
creation=0
romversion=0
pilotusername=Greg Copeland
default_sync_action=custom
basedir=/home/gcope/MyPilot
