Well, I submitted that bug on evolution hanging on modem disconnects:

    http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=34428

It got immediately closed because evolution is hanging in some mozilla
library and there is "nothing we can do about it."

So, we now know that the hanging problem is neither Linux, UW IMAP, or
TCP, but is actually mozilla -- yet mozilla IMAP on Linux does not hang
when a modem is disconnected.

I don't suppose it's possible that the library is not being used
correctly...

Nah, I vote for blaming it on Microsoft programmers. They actually
figured out how to write a working signal handler, therefore set a bad
example and that's there fault :-). Shame on the Mozilla programmers to
follow that example. Oh wait there's is Bill Joy and the boys from BSD
networking, let's blame them, since they started this mess.

Just couldn't resist,
Ronald

BTW. I will fix it in the next week(s) in my tree.

so what's the problem?

Michael and Ted, thanks for the advice!

It was the vfolders that were killing IMAP performance.

The default vfolders that were added for free when I upgraded to 1.20
were called "unread mail" and "unimportant mail". I didn't have them
before and I don't use them ever, so I deleted them and, voila, the
insane checking and rechecking went away. Speed is back to normal. May
I be excused from deinstalling my harddrive to test 1.08?

OK, for me, the conclusions from this thread are:

- It was the new vfolders that were causing slow IMAP in
1.20 v.s. 1.08; UW IMAP was probably a total red herring.

- Vfolders should not be added unless you ask for them. This will
significantly lower the blood pressure of Ximian employees.

- The hang due to disconnects is not a problem with Linux but a bug
in evolution. I will submit a bug report on that.

Thank God it's over!

When I got rid of those pesky vFolders on IMAP... It made a HUGE
difference. Selecting folders and messages is now many times faster.

I just noticed that 1.2 had installed two 'default' vfolders. I don't
remember their names but I believe they referred local mailboxes. I
found that when I deleted these, my IMAP performance improved (mostly
switching between large folders.

Does this make sense?
