Re: [orca-list] talking gdm with orca in fedora

Installing a console screen reader doesn't daunt me. I thought the
one you wrote was quite nice actually, if I may say so. I think the
Gnome version they use is like 2.28 or something like that.
Automating the installation is a bit more daunting to me since I know
next to nothing about the packages, organization ETC. of RHEL at this
time other than what can be learned from the odd book or two that
covers the older versions of Rhel.

Hi,

Right. In fact, if I'm not mistaken Anaconda allows a user to install
REL over a telnet connection so its possible to boot up the server on
the REL disc, type in a command at the boot prompt, and be sitting at
another Linux terminal with telnet running to do the install. I've
done that with Fedora and I've heard its possible to do the same with
Red Hat Enterprise, but have not tried it myself. Still, once the
system is installed a blind admin should be able to ssh into the root
account and get things done things remotely. If speech is required I
imagine something like YASR, Emacspeak, or Speakup could be used for
the console.

Cheers!

Probably a lot of sysadmin tasks can be done from a console or over ssh,
though you might need to install a console screen reader yourself if you
wanted that. And RHEL is GNOME-based, so Orca should run on it as long as
it isn't some ancient version of RHEL. I don't know if installation would
be accessible; you might want to look into trying to automate it if you
needed to do installs.
