I was just thinking something along those lines last night, actually,
but I think minimized windows would work better on the left side. This
would keep them separate from notifications, but still leave them easily
accessible. The biggest problem right now is that you have to go to the
overlay to get minimized windows back, but shrinking them down to the
corner would keep them visible from the desktop. As you said, the
notification area is persistent across all desktops, so they can either
restore to the current desktop or the one where they "belong".
