Believe it or not, Pulse is a non issue for me in Ubuntu since 13.10. Now, using 14.04, I find I can still
have console speech. I enable the module for speakup in the gnome terminal and launch espeakup, mosy on over
to tty1, login and voi la! Speakup starts talking and emacspeak works in the console. If other distros
could do whatever magical thing Ubuntu did with their pulse configuration, this issue could be laid to rest
with everyone happy. I don't dare so much as look at the config files in my Ubuntu box lest I wake the
proverbial baby and break something. Truth is, though, that they've finally got it working like a charm on
that distro. I've used recently Fedora and Debian and can't say the same for either one.

Hi,
There is the catch 22 I see with VI Linux users. Most mainstream Linux users, those that use the GUI, have
moved on to using the GUI and therefore pulse is a non-issue for them. Even I confess since I rarely use
console speech this conflict between alsa and pulse is something of a non-issue for me personally. However,
as many VI users still rely on console speech via Speakup etc they also depend on alsa and don't want to
fight with pulse. The only solution I can see is perhaps writing a new screen reader for the console that
uses pulse by default which would make alsa verses pulse a non-issue for VI users. Any thoughts?

hi
Totally agree. I've switched to usinb libao, because of the alsa bugs
no one seems to want to fix. And please don't start in with the use
pulse audio option? Pulse is not an option for me, until and unless it
supports console speech out of the box
