guess the moral of the story is, it's easiest when you build your pc
from parts so you have control of what cards are installed where. If
I ever get a laptop, I'll make srue to get something like an Assus
wehere I most likely won't have to worry too much about such things.
I share my pc and stuff with my wife who is sighted and my children
both of whom are sighted as well. I want them to have the full
graphical experience intended by the manufacturer when they get on my
machine.
My sense of the video world is that the ATI devices track pretty closely
to leading edge video. And, they're all open source, so very well
supported by Linux distros.
Yes, you have more control when you build from parts. But, it's usually
possible to avoid a few gotchyas, like Nvidea, even when you order off
the shelf. Always check the parts list, imo.

My experience jives with Janine's. I'm not sure about all Nvidia
drivers, but I don't have Optimus support on my laptop running Ubuntu. I
basically turned off the Nvidia GPU and just run with the on board Intel
GPU.

Hi,
I seem to remember Ubuntu having drivers for Nvidia. Is this not
correct?

Glad to hear your video signal issue is resolved, Robert.
As an FYI for the future, problems with nvidea are pretty much endemic.
That company doesn't open their technology, therefore open source
environments like Linux frequently have problems with their devices.
It's not at all Fedora specific, by the way.

Thanks, Janina and Jason.
I think my problem was more so related to the nVidia driver than
anything. I added a variable (GRUB_GFXMODE) into /etc/default/grub and
set IT to an appropriate resolution, updated my GRUB configuration
file with "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg', and everything
seems to be working. I had a slight scare today because I had no video
at all, but my system seems to be up and running just fine now. I was
worried that something had happened to my monitor or video card, but I
think my oldest son (who is almost
three) got onto my desk and got into my cables. Fortunately everything
is working just fine now!
Thanks for the help and the suggestions.

If I recall correctly, Robert installed from a Fedora Live image.
Those images are necessarilyminimal, especially as they still try to
fit themselves onto CD ROM media.
My first expectation is a missing library of some kind.
If this is correct, it points out the value of preferring the full
version DVD image. However, there's still no reason to reinstall as
entire groups of related technologies can be installed by yum. To see
a list of these groups, do:
yum grouplist
You'll need to pipe this to more, or even into a file. Also, the
groups sometimes have spaces, so need special handling when you do the:
yum groupinstall [group]
command.

I would encourage you to look for solutions without reinstalling.
If you'd like to say more about your "out of range" error, I'll try
to help. Did you check in /var/log/messages for more details on
that message?
If there's a separate log file for X server messages, I would
suggest looking there as well.
I have never had to re-install a Linux system due to a software
problem.
