Well, before gnome 3 came out, the desktop environment wasn't all that
bad. In fact, I kind of liked the more linear style given to the menu
with recent updates of gnome 2.32. With most gnome applications, it's
nearly impossible or at least for me, nearly impossible to figure out
what programs are used for given applications that one would normally
find from the menus. that's the whole advantage of a desktop is you
can launch applications without having to know the exact name of the
binaries plus many times, complex command line options are being
passed to sed applications from the launcher or menu entry. Sure, I
like the console as much as the next guy but desktops have their
advantages too as long as they are fully accessible.
In this case right now, gnome3 really appears to be broken pretty
majorly and will prove unconvincing for any new blind users to want to
give this a try. These issues really need fixing before I go and try
and show this to anyone else.

The best way I have found to get at it is to press ctrl+alt+tab to
get to the top panel, tab until you hear menu, now try some
cursoring left and right and try up and down in different places and
it will appear. Be careful as you may end up in the applications or
places menu as well and once in those you are captive until you
press escape to exit those menus.
My gods. Wouldn't it just be easier to go back to basics, ditch
what you can of the stoopid desktop managers, have X11 fire up a
terminal when you log on, and type your program names manually?
