Metaphor: A tree (.xcf) will grow away from the forest
(project/workspace), but a leaf (.jpg or .png) cut away from the tree
won't.

(And yes, I am perfectly aware that in a graph theory sense what I'm
proposing to call a "leaf" is actually a "root". The point here is to
communicate the key information to non-technical users in a form that
they will understand and remember.)
