Hi Nicolas,

Now that is the best idea I've seen on this subject. xcf is not an image format since just about nothing else can read it. It is Gimp's internal format. Describing it as saving the gimp workspace is a lot closer to describing its real function and would instantly make sense.

In any other context opening a file and then saving it, the user will *expect to be saving the file* . Why try to redefine what the world already does.

Calling it save workspace makes it instantly clear that it will not writing back to the source image and that any layers etc and work in progress will be safe.

Thus the user would realise what xcf is about and would not be confused by the interface insisting he saves as xcf when he wants to save his png.

Despite the rest of the save/export argument this seems like damn good idea all round.

In fact if this had been thought of years ago, messing with File | Save would probably not have been needed to force people to use xcf.

Chapeau, Nicolas.
