Are you sure about this? Evolution is no longer the *default* MUA in
Ubuntu, but reasonably up-to-date versions continue to be offered in the
repositories. I'm not on Saucy now, but I'm sure that offers evo 3.8.x.
Saucy (13.10, to be released in mid-October) still uses the evolution
calendaring functions for their version of the GNOME calendar too.
From the Evo info blurb provided in Ubuntu Software Centre in the latest
stable version of Ubuntu

Canonical provides critical updates for Evolution Mail and Calendar
until January 2014.

That's when Ubuntu 13.04 goes EOL. I don't think that refers to
evolution specifically. Ubuntu 13.10 will be based on GNOME 3.8, so
software based on GNOME 3.4 will not get any updates from Ubuntu after
13.04 is EOL, including evolution 3.6.x. Evolution 3.8.x is provided by
Ubuntu 13.10.
I can see how that can be interpreted two ways. I have also seen another
reference to Canonical dropping Evolution in the next release (I cannot
remember where I saw it). What will be will be!
Be that as it may, if we newcomers have little knowledge of your
technical world (I have no idea what a PPA is), you are essentially
depriving those less technically inclined folks from jumping on the
Linux bandwagon.
PPA = Personal Package Archive. Basically, non-Canonical or non-Ubuntu
repositories run by people who package software. Duck-Duck-Go is your friend.
Thank you for explaining this. I have just upgraded to Evo 3.8.? via
this method. It worked very well
Please don't top post.
Ahh - the words that drive many of us away from these helpful forums
Is it so hard to do as the Romans do when in Rome? No, it's merely
polite.
The issue of top, bottom or interspersed postings will exist for ever. I
prefer top posting because I present and can read the bottom line
immediately. The context advantage of bottom posting is good but to read
the bottom line I have to take a couple of extra key strokes. The above
example of interspersed posting speaks for itself. To be honest I do not
bother reading most bottom posted messages
Telling someone not to bottom post without even a welcome or salutation
is in itself rude.
In any case, thank you for your response. It helped me immensely
Preston
