hold it right there. I never called anyone an idiot. I said it doesn't make any sense to me. I understand where they are coming from, but I do not agree. and MANY people agree with me. what was Mr David Woodhouse's supportive argument? It was that new users reply at the top... and that they should be LARTed or some other cute word.
That's only because new users are usually coming from the Microsoft world, in which top-posting is the default behavior. Since top-posting is a Microsoft-induced insanity, why would we want to support it?
if new users are top-posting, doesn't it then make sense that top-posting seems more intuitive? why yes, yes it does.
Wrong. See above. I have been posting in various fora since before Microsoft had even heard of this thing called the internet, and prior to Microsoft, bottom-posting was the well-known accepted standard, with interlinear posting used when you wanted to make points about specific portions of a message, rather than about the entire message you are replying to as a whole.
but enough of that, the thread is no longer about who's way is right or wrong. it's impossible to get everyone to agree with any one way. so lets face it, there is no One True Way (tm).
True. There is the standard way, and there is the Microsoft way.
with that in mind, where should the editor put the cursor when you first open the composer? there is only one place that makes sense and is the easiest for everyone - no matter what style post you are doing. and that position is at the top of the editor. this is the only logical place to put it.
And that position is at the bottom of the editor, where standard replies have gone since we were hammering out email over 300 baud acoustic modems. This is the only logical place to put it.
we do not need an option for it.
As you can see, I disagree. For those of us who prefer the standard way, posting at the bottom is desired. For those who prefer the Microsoft way, posting at the top is desired. Since the two groups will never fully agree, it only makes sense to provide both options. -- All private email sent with PGP encryption. Email for key.
