Re: [orca-list] OT: Two questions (Mate Q and picking a forum software)

Everybody still uses ftp, which has no issue if over SSH or read-only.

What Jace meant is that the hosting provider doesn't allow direct access
through the ssh command.

My hosting provider allows me ssh, but only password protected and
from two registered IPs.

PS don't forget to send to reply or cc also the orca-list.

Oh, people still use FTP? I think it's been at least a decade since I
last used FTP.

In that case, get a new hosting provider. Only allowing insecure FTP
connections is a new one for me.... not sure how they're still in
business.

For me command line tool are always more accessible than graphical ones.

I will mention sftp, curl, lftp, rsync. All have man pages and --help
option, with a remote host rsync needs that rsync protocol be allowed.

I like lftp. For instance: "lftp -c "mirror <some remote host>". Also, just
type lftp to start it in interactive mode, then "help" to know the available
commands.

Okay gonna try writing this since Thunderbird loves to not send....

Got the source for a forum I'd like to use from the developer's
site....now what's the best/most acessible/easiest to use FTP client for
pulling down stuff/uploading stuff to a server? Filezilla's an....annoying
choice for me. So...any others are appreciated

Just wanted to add onto my previous replies....

Tried SMF. It won't, by default let me jump between posts by headings
which is something I for one would like. That being said, the roup wants
simple, lightweight and easy....and for the blind users in it I've been
getting talk of hey, Jace, youknow of any that will let each post be its
own heading?

Off the top of my head, I know of a few but I'm still looking for that
one forum software that ticks all the boxes, ya know?

Also, related note, I'm impressed showing Mate to a Windows user and them
being right at home after I said hey, you hit the windows key, you got a
start menu, you can right click, you can do everything and it's just
different ways o doing stuff. Think I lucked out with that one

I can't speak for everyone who will be using your forum, but SMF seems
to be less cluttered as I look at it. It does have some pretty good
locking features and such as well, though I haven't really done much
admin stuff on it. PHPBB really isn't bad either, so it's definitely
worth a look, especially if it looks better to you from the point of
view of an admin as well as a user.
