Re: [orca-list] I hate pulse

Title: Assinatura Informal

Even before I installed at-spi2-core 2.25 I never was forced to reboot my machine after a crash.

I had to wait a memory dump finished and  it took sometime to complete.

How could it survive a reboot though? Is there an at-spi2-core config file I should remove? A second reboot seemed to fix my problem last night which is why I concluded it was pulse. That is the weirdest thing about pulse. It does not behave the same from one reboot to the next. Of course, as a linux sysadmin, I know how to explain that, you can never guarantee that hardware devices are discovered in the same order. But I've seen it before where you switchfrom your sound card to a usb headset for example. Then if you lose speech for some reason, you can try rebooting 2 or 3 times and sometimes that fixes it. More likely, you will have to remove your pulseaudio settings to get sound back. I'm lucky enough to have another linux box around at all times because I'm a server admin. I can always log into a server and then back to my desktop and remove, what is it?, ~/.config/pulse/. Something like that. I've had to do that maybe 3 or 4 times over the last couple of years. It is extremely annoying but not a deal killer.

Hi all.

Regarding the bug mentioned by chrys, It seems to be fixed in version 2.25 of at-spi2-core. After I installed this version I had no crashes related to the mentioned bug.

But it is present in in the stable version of at-spi2-core, at least in my machine.

Howdy Joanie,

nope it still happens a lot of times here in Arch gnome 2.26.x.
I know that this could not fixed in orca.
the bug is reopend and some fresh dump is send to the tracker ( it seems to be in testing since 2017-06-26 by Jose Vilmar Estacio de Souza)

Hey Chris.

I thought the AT-SPI2 crasher bug was fixed (in AT-SPI2. I cannot fix it
in Orca.). Is your girlfriend using the latest AT-SPI2? If so and the
problem is persisting, doesn't Mike Gorse have the data he needs?

Howdy,

I don't think that's a pulse problem. Otherwise he would not have any
sound at all.
So no need to blame or flame pulse here. it works perfectly with orca/
speech-dispatcher.
I would promise he is stepped into the AT-API crasher bug a few times.
that happens really often since Gnome 2.24.x
my girlfriend restarts orca about 40 times per day lol. i hope this is
fixed soon.

How would I go about terminating Pulse in favour of Alsa please?
Hi James,
as far as I know:
1. Create ~/.pulse
2. Change to that folder
3. Edit/create a textfile called client.conf
4. In that file put the line:
autospawn = no
If client.conf is already present and a line starting autospawn is
already present, make sure that "no" is after the equal sign.
5. in the terminal or using alt+2 type:
pulseaudio --kill

Depending on your systemm, you can use any means to run the pulseaudio
--kill command on login or during bootup. It has to happen after pulse
is running.

Goodluck, HTH.

Best wishes,

Jeanette
