How could it survive a reboot though? Is there an at-spi2-core config 
file I should remove? A second reboot seemed to fix my problem last 
night which is why I concluded it was pulse. That is the weirdest thing 
about pulse. It does not behave the same from one reboot to the next. Of 
course, as a linux sysadmin, I know how to explain that, you can never 
guarantee that hardware devices are discovered in the same order. But 
I've seen it before where you switchfrom your sound card to a usb 
headset for example. Then if you lose speech for some reason, you can 
try rebooting 2 or 3 times and sometimes that fixes it. More likely, you 
will have to remove your pulseaudio settings to get sound back. I'm 
lucky enough to have another linux box around at all times because I'm a 
server admin. I can always log into a server and then back to my desktop 
and remove, what is it?, ~/.config/pulse/. Something like that. I've had 
to do that maybe 3 or 4 times over the last couple of years. It is 
extremely annoying but not a deal killer.
