hmmm, tried webdavs://covici.com/owncloud/remote.php/webdav -- I do have
ssl enabled, but no joy, just an empty frame. The first time I got an
error, but the second time, it just said 0 items. It did not ask for a
user name, so maybe there is some setting or something.

Don't know how you would share links but here's how to get to the interface:
From nautilus hit f10 to access the menu bar. Go to file and then location or, I think it says new
location. Then, type the following suitably modified to your setup:
dav://yourdomain.com/owncloud/remote.php/webdav
If you have ssl enabled, it's davs not dav at the beginning of the url. You'll be prompted for your
username and password and then, you are in. It works just like dropbox or any other directory. Try the
menu key or a right click to see what options you get. Shahring a link might be one of them, who knows?

But can you share links to a file from that interface? How would I get to that interface?

Oh, man! You have absolutely got to try the webdav interface! It lets you use Nautilus or whatever your
file manager is.a11y is not an issue.

I am not using the webdav interface, just the regular html interface
on the server itself and accessibility has been a mess, its still a
bit quirky, but it seems better with the new release.

I had everyone in the family with an account on it and we all used our mobile devices with it. IN our
case, it's iPhones and iPads. The owncloud installation was treated as a strict server so, we never
added files through the command line of the very machine they were stored on. I started to use the
webdav interface which looks pretty promising and, at least, doesn'thang the whole installation
whenever you have two or three thousand photos and videos to peruse.

Oh, and incidentally, I think their enterprise paid version of OwnCloud may have a few proprietary
components. They probably do that thing where they release the source two or three versions later into
the community version as they keep improving their paid product.

Well, I did the upgrade and they did make some improvements in the accessibility of their web
interface, at any rate. I have not tested uploading files, as I usually just add them from the command
line.

The OwnCloud server is currently at version 8.0. The client is at
version 1.7. I need to update my server, as I believe I'm still
running
7.0 there, but I have no trouble at all uploading files, even in
my current version.
Regarding the license of OwnCloud, it is indeed open source, and
there are no proprietary bits that I have installed, as if they do
exist, they certainly wouldn't improve its functionality; they
would only remove my freedoms, which I hold at a fairly high
value. I'm happiest when the code is in the public domain, and any
time I write anything at all, I use either the Unlicense[1] or the
Creative Commons CC0 waiver[2]. That said, I will happily use any
software as long as it has a free/open source license that at
least makes the attempt to respect my freedom to use, modify and
distribute modified or unmodified copies of it, and gives me access to the source code if I want it.
