Well, I wanted to see what Github did. They use the same construct, two
cells (and the line numbers aren't hidden from anyone). To make them
useful for finding lines of code, each span with a number in it is also
given an id, so you can use css :target and as a URL hash. That might
be something to add if that's reasonable.
In any case, if anyone finds themselves reading some list of random
weird things, they would move on to the next object and go from
there. Nobody's forced to sit and read a long list of numbers passively.
