Indeed,
I guessed some thing was wrong, But I get bonobo based errors when I try
to run swing based apps.
Happy hacking.

After reading this thread, it sounds like to me, that java ATK wrapper
is requiring the old gnome setup (2.0 stuff and bonovo). I thought
with gnome 3 that bonovo was depricated; oh and gconf too. So, does
java ATK wrapper need some updating to be good with gnome 3?

The classpath is very important.
If you are using openjdk then it is some thing like
/usr/lib/java/java-6-openjdk/jre/ext
I might be slightly off the track but I am sure its there and not
/usr/share/java where lot of jar files are found.
This is a confusing pitfall.
happy hacking.

Hello MichaÅ, thanks so much for your prompt response.
Actually, if you've compiled and installed it, check if your java
installation has the file java-atk-wrapper.jar in the jre/lib/ext
directory,
Yes, there is a
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26/jre/lib/ext/java-atk-wrapper.jar
file that belongs root.root and is readable by all.
and accessibility.properties in the jre/lib.
Yes, that one is there, too.
In addition to comments, it contains this line:
assistive_technologies=org.GNOME.Accessibility.AtkWrapper
and has same owner, group and permissions than the jar file.
