Yes, I downloaded compiled and installed 2.20.3 into my box. Orca -t
brought up the various choices and I was able to configure them and I
had speech through speech dispatcher all the way. I did that from a
strait text console so I now wonder what the best command is to start
the who show. Dumb question I suppose. So far, I've been starting up
gnome with 'gdm --no-daemon' because that's what I see in my inittab
file for run-level 4. However, I have a problem with alt-F2. I login
and I have some simple wav files to tell me this but after I hit
alt-F2 and type orca (or any other command for that matter), I get the
sound prompt that login is ready. Upon looking at the log file,
/var/log/secure, I see an item that indicates that my session was
closed. It's almost as if I am getting logged off every time I try
and launch any commands.
What am I doing wrong here? Ever so close (I think).

Hi Steve:
Sorry about the problem. :-( This is fixed in Orca 2.20.3, and I believe
that's just about the only source code change that went into 2.20.3, so you
should be safe just grabbing/installing Orca 2.20.3.

What version of Orca did you install? I think I saw this bug fixed in
Orca 2.20.3, but
someone more familiar with ORca can give a better answer.
Version 2.20.2 from the Slackware dropline packages. If it is a
matter of a simple correction to the python source file, I'd be glad
to apply the fix. Not sure the impact of mixing and matching later
fixes just yet. I figured if it could get it going solidly, then I
can do the upgrades and look for the latest enhancements. Thanks for
the help so far. Oh, I did an 'orca --version' for the hell of it and
got the same syntax errors.:)
