I basically built a slackware package from a make of
speech-dispatcher. It included the python library interface but no
mention of python-speechd. I didn't realize that was a separate but
needed application as well. I'll go and look for it.
In reply to Tomos's message about testing Orca, I tried that
previously and all was silent. I got the audio confirmation that my
login was successful with some wav files I set up but I then did the
alt-F2 - orca command but no sounds. I can only assume that Orca was
starting but not picking up the speech. What exactly does orca -t
do. What is this test mode you speak of?

Which command did you use to install Speech-dispatcher? That command
should install python-speechd too.
