Two things here. I'm on a Slackware system so apt-get isn't my
thing. The python components are in their proper place and when I do
'import speechd' from inside a python shell, I get no errors. So the
python server should be available.
the other thing is without speech, I can't navigate around in gnome
from the GUI. So if there is another config file I can edit to set
defaults before starting orca, I'm open for ideas. The wikki pages I
looked at don't say any more on the speech dispatcher backend that I
could find any how.

Hi Steve,
run the following command as root:
apt-get install python-speechd
Then restart Orca, go to the preferences dialog and look on tab "speech"
whether Speech-Dispatcher is there; it should be there as speech server
in addition to Gnome-Speech.
