While the speech-dispatcher package in gutsy appears to have a CVS snapshot version, it is 0.6.4 final, with 
a few 
bugfix patches included. you should have not needed to build from source, and since you've done so, and 
installed 
python-speechd, you have two copies of the speech-dispatcher libraries installed on the system, so something 
is very 
much likely to break somewhere. I would suggest removing everything relating to speech-dispatcher from 
/usr/local/*.
