Aaaaand of course we still need to support older GDM releases, GDM 3.4
specifically. Look at the buttload of bug reports about the GDM 3-8 /
gnome-shell 3.8 interdependency if you need a reason.

Why should we support older gdm releases? It was your words:

Because they are out there, being used by real users.

Same with compiz, it out there and is being used by users and yet you don't want add (/support) session file for compiz.

So, if i will make new dm implementing things in my way and without following specifications you are going to update session files so they can be loaded in my dm? Or you will say - go and fix your dm, nothing wrong with session files?
