Yet another completely different (and rather radical) idea: If the
user saves as JPEG (say), GIMP automatically and silently saves the
XCF alongside it or in a special folder. Then Open/Save does
everything you want, and when the beginner user reopens the JPEG, he
can be asked if he/she wants to actually get back the XCF.
