I haven't tried any sawfish stuff from emacs, but sawfish-client 
definitely works.  I'd suggest at least trying sawfish-client.

Or, just "ln -s ~/.sawfish/rc ~/.sawfishrc".

I'm not sure if this is actually necessary, but I've been 
configured this way for years just to be sure.
