As an aside, I installed the current GhostBSD yesterday.

It ships with lightdm and Mate 1.26, among others.

Just typing as root:
pkg install orca
fetched and installed orca 41.0, speech-dispatcher 0.10.2 and an 
espeakup voice.

Then lightdm handled the Alt+Super+S shortcut and I had speech in it.

orca also works in Mate, at least if started from mate-terminal or a run 
dialog.

I really like GhostBSD.
