OK, I have installed lightdm on my gentoo system because gdm keeps
crashing my system altogether. What do I need to change to make the
greeter accessible?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Actually as far as I am aware, both greeters use gtk. Slick
greeter is the greeter used I believe by Mint, and Fedora's MATE
spin is also using it. Slick greeter allows you to configure it
to start orca using its standard alt+super+s shortcut, whereas
gtk greeter uses f4 I believe it is. The problem is that gtk
greeter still needs some additional configuration in order for
the screen reader to work correctly; that is to say I wasn't able
to get gtk greeter speaking by simply pressing the alt+f4
shortcut. I still had to reconfigure
/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf in order to get it
speaking. There are also some differences in the layouts,
although once you get either one speaking, both work well with
Orca.
