Not true, Dave. I ust ran through the Budgie installer and Mate
and okay, they're finnicky but absolutely possible to install. All
three use the same installer, though each version has their own
quirks.
FWIW I'd say stick with Mate/Gnome as Budgie is transitioning to
QT. Which is a shame as I really, really like Budgei as a desktop
and an idea. That being said, Mate is snappy and fast and I'm all
for more distros.
For the installer, it took tabbingg around to get it to work, and
a quick google to get autologin working on Mate, but....the system
is rock steady and worth it. Now, if I could get a few of the
Ubuntu-specific addons working.....well I can but have to remember
what the packages are....it's definitely doable.
I don't think they're s clueless as people think, all it takes is
somebody to convince the Solus team and nod to little
improvements. Mate's already there, and Gnome as well, nd with
them basically transitioning their flagship to QT that's pushed
acessibility down the list.
That being said, I'm wondering if it's possible to update Orca on
Solus, I'll try in a VM a moment with my Mate install.

Solus is an independent distribution that comes in flavors for
each of Gnome, Mate, and their flagship, Budgie desktops. It is
a rolling release, though not moving in sync with others like
Arch. Its target user is the home pc user for desktop,
multimedia, etc. Their official web presence is here.
See for yourself.
In case you haven't kept up with all the discussion, All the
live media are accessible. Only in the Gnome version, is the
installer accessible. The community is largely unfamiliar with
accessibility concerns, though Mate and Budgie live medkia...
It's probably not hopeless.
