The mate live system is accessible, but I could not get the installer to be so. Instead of the launcher on the desktop, I opened a terminal and ran:
sudo -E os-installer-wrapper
and got nothing from orca. I'm not sure what's missing, here.
The Gnome edition uses the same installer, and it works.
