The GNOME is using an older version, on which the 'settings' dialogue is more accessible than on 3.30, IMO.  I think it's using gdm, but I can't get it talking, even though the screen reader menu option is ticked, and the volume is about 50% as I mentioned yesterday.  You'll find the Mate live medium accessible, but the install is not; I suspect there's something lot set that allows gui apps running as superuser to talk.
