See my other post, pcmanfm is working fine for managing the desktop. Spacefm won't however, but as for now
I'm very happy keeping pcmanfm around as even
though I like spacefm a lot and am using it some I still find pcmanfm more comfortable for some things and I
can do the vast majorityh of what I want to
do with pcmanfm.
I just start pcmanfm with the fluxbox startup file where I start orca, play my desktop-login sound, etc.
Thanks again for bringing spacefm to our attention and helping me get started with the bits that were not
clear to me.

I used PcmanFM to manage my desktop with no problems on Arch Linux. You
have to start it after you login, try to use .bashrc or whatever is
confortable for you. See Arch Linux wiki entry for PcmanFM for more

manage desktop icons. There's probably an api and standard for this.
The problem is, unless you're using nautilus, orca returns "not
selected" after each icon, causing some subtle issues. Nemo, linux
mint's fork of nautilus, can also manage the desktop, and it requires
a check of a check box in the preferences to make this happen. I'm not
sure what nautilus does differently, but orca seems to work better
with it managing the desktop than with other file managers. This is
likely a combination of bugs in orca itself, and the file manager. I
think, but cannot prove, that most of the problem is orca using older
code from gnome 2, or gtk2, and trying to guess where the file manager
doesn't give it the information it needs.
