is there a way to change espeak variants like setting the default so
that orca uses klatt4 rather than the variant it speaks with by
default?
You could make a new voice file in espeak-data/voices which contains
the data from the voice file that you want, followed by the data from
the variant file that you want.
For example, make a file "espeak-data/voices/en-josh" which contains
the text copied from the file "en-us" followed by the text copied from
the file "!v/klatt4" (or whatever variant you want).
If Orca allows you to choose any of the available voice files, then
hopefully this new one will appear in its voices list.
