I'm not sure about other distros, but in Vinux 3.x, there's an option in
the menus called "File browser as root". This will bring up Nautilus as
root, after you provide your sudo password, and allow you to edit such
system config files. No CLI involved at all if you don't want to use it.

last time I used ubuntu I had to drop in to command line just to open
text editor to edit conf files couldn't do that from gui do to root not
being available in ubuntu gui

Yes, launch gedit in gksudo, and that will give you root access. The
other option is enable the root account and log directly in as root.
