Re: [orca-list] talking gdm with orca in fedora

Hi,

I seem to remember Ubuntu having drivers for Nvidia. Is this not correct?

Sure. I think every Linux distro has nvidea drivers. Nvidea is far too
common to ignore. However, I believe they're all reverse-engineered
drivers. Or, perhaps some are released from time to time by Nvidea
itself, I don't recall off hand which is the Nividea case.

Still, reverse engineered means guess work.

And, vendor released drivers often don't track related Linux
technology well. Also, if vendor released, the user needs to know to get
the driver from the vendor and install it correctly. Proprietary vendor
drivers are not going to be packaged by Linux distributions, so you
can't expect to find them on a Live image.

So, the moral of the story is avoid Nvidea unless you actually want to
mess with these kinds of constraints--arguably a peculiar choice for a
screen reader user.

Glad to hear your video signal issue is resolved, Robert.

As an FYI for the future, problems with nvidea are pretty much endemic.
That company doesn't open their technology, therefore open source
environments like Linux frequently have problems with their devices.
It's not at all Fedora specific, by the way.

Thanks, Janina and Jason.

I think my problem was more so related to the nVidia driver than
anything. I added a variable (GRUB_GFXMODE) into /etc/default/grub and
set IT to an appropriate resolution, updated my GRUB configuration
file with "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg', and everything
seems to be working. I had a slight scare today because I had no video
at all, but my system seems to be up and running just fine now. I was
worried that something had happened to my monitor or video card, but I
think my oldest son (who is almost
three) got onto my desk and got into my cables. Fortunately everything
is working just fine now!

Thanks for the help and the suggestions.

If I recall correctly, Robert installed from a Fedora Live image.
Those images are necessarilyminimal, especially as they still try to
fit themselves onto CD ROM media.

My first expectation is a missing library of some kind.

If this is correct, it points out the value of preferring the full
version DVD image. However, there's still no reason to reinstall as
entire groups of related technologies can be installed by yum. To see
a list of these groups, do:

yum grouplist

You'll need to pipe this to more, or even into a file. Also, the
groups sometimes have spaces, so need special handling when you do the:

yum groupinstall [group]

command.

I would encourage you to look for solutions without reinstalling.
If you'd like to say more about your "out of range" error, I'll try
to help. Did you check in /var/log/messages for more details on
that message?
If there's a separate log file for X server messages, I would
suggest looking there as well.

I have never had to re-install a Linux system due to a software problem.
