Re: [orca-list] Festival

Hi Alex,
Then I would like to give 22 bit voices a try.
Can you or some one tell me hot to get festival working with speech dispatcher and how I can install these 22 bit voices?
Happy hacking.

Congratulations! You got farther than I got. I got speech working
all right but I never did get sound icons to work and mine worked
through gnome-speech and not speech dispatcher. Try as I might, I was
never quite able to get speech dispatcher to see Festival so that Orca
presented it as an option in the available speech synthesizers. I
certainly never made it as far as sound icons. Glad it's working well
for you and you seem to like it.

Krishnakant: Festival's voice texture and quality depends on which
voice you have installed. The 8kbps voices are kind of robotic with a
humanesque character to them, the 16kbps are noticeably more human
sounding and, lastly the 22kbps are high quality human-sounding voices
that can go toe to toe with some of the commercial ones I've used. If
you use the mbrola voices, their quality is quite nice and
human-sounding as well.

Hey everyone,

I got festival working in vinux 3.2 with speech-dispatcher and pulse
audio, even the sound icons are working...

only thing I had to do was follow previous instructions plus install
speech-dispatcher-festival and get rid of the lines in /etc/festival.scm
about czech
it's surprisingly responsive!

Hello, Boris,

I prepared instructions for people who wanted to try Festival out a
couple of years ago. They are very strongly geared towards users of
Vinux but, I think they can be adapted to a wider audience. I just
lack the time and motivation to do so at present. I'm attaching a
copy of this file written in html in case you would care to use some
of its content to flesh out the guide you all have written which does
a nice job of addressing the more technical points.

Thanks.

however the files listed in the instructions give 404 not found errors
the files are now online, I apologize for the errors
