I had the impression that Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell were, sort-of 
synonymous.  Given your Gnome 3 experience, I'm glad they're not.  Still 
looking to give Gnome 3 a spin.  Ubuntu's Unity is not Gnome Shell, and 
its Classic Gnome is not Gnome 3.
