Re: [orca-list] Orca, Python and blind programming

For indentation in python, I seem to be productive enough with speakup in
a text editer using the numpad-8 key in quick succession to tell me the
column on which code starts on a line when and only when I need to know
that.

Hi

Thanks for all the tips.

Eclipse is my favourite IDE and I use it in Windows all the time (mainly for
Java developments) it is fully accessible with JAWS but sadly not with NVDA.
It will be good if it can be fully accessible with Orca but I appreciate that
the developers have many more pressing issues in the next few months.

I have tried the speak indentation option with Orca and it works well; one
useful feature of the dreaded other screen reader is that it only speaks
indentation changes so for example if you have two lines with 3 spaces
indentations it will speak only the first one and thereafter when there is a
change; you can force it to speak the indentation in any case by pressing the
modifier with the Up or Down keys and indentation is announced but the line
does not move.

My next step is to try the Python plugin for Eclipse and see how I can get on.

Hi Steve,
Eclipse can be used to develop C programs, web applications and much much
more, including python programs. As I said in my previous message, you'll
need a plugin called pydev if memory serves me correctly.
you'll also find some problems depending on the version of eclipse used.

I though Eclipse was only meant for Java; you can use it with Python
too? If so, I might want to look at it. I agree with the notion
about EmacSpeak and the editing modes. But I thought Eclipse might be
more appropriate for dealing with forms; not sure though.

Hi,

The problem is that eclipse is not working well with orca, at least
in my karmic machine.
Thanks.

Hi

I have experience in developing software in a number of computer
languages.
Orca is written in Python no doubt for good reasons.

As a blind programmer who rely on speech (I lost my sight to late
in life to be using Braille) I find the way Python mark blocks of
instructions with indentation practically unusable with speech
with a screen reader (other languages mostly use brackets for this
purpose which is easy to deal with).

I know that there are hacks out there to use a pre processor to
translate from brackets to indentations but these are probably of
no use with an IDE; I do not wish to go back to text editor for
software development.
So if somebody knows an efficient way of dealing with this I will
be interested to know.

Thanks
