You need to pipe it to xclip from another program or use input redirection in

No, in the past, we were able to select text with the flat review
slash key as previously mentioned in this thread and then use the
standard methods to copy to the clipboard with either Edit/Copy or by
pressing shift+Control+C. The copying to the clipboard part still
works fine. One way one could copy text from the terminal to the
clipboard could be to select the entire screen with Edit/Select all
and then drop the entire contents into an edit window or perhaps a
native console's edit environment where it could be cut down to size;
hoky indeed but works for the time being.

echo $DISPLAY from Gnome-terminal and make sure you are using exactly the same
value as the display option when invoking xclip from the console session.

Actually I have even a later development in this area. I just
discovered that if I get into gnome with 'startx' from a normal user
login, xclip behaves it's good ol' self. When I login through gdm,
xclip gives the error I showed last time. Strange problem but it
probably isn't worth hassling too much about. I like using the gdm
login facility but if I want xclip bad enough, I guess I can give up
one of my 12 VCs to support logging in from one of my user terminals.
