Hi. On my Debian Sid box, part of the problem was fixed by changes to my /etc/sudoers file.
One of the changes I'd noticed recently was I could no longer do commands like sudo gedit file. The command
would work,
but Orca couldn't read anything in the gedit window. I used visudo to add the following line to /etc/sudoers
and it now works again.
Defaults env_keep+="GTK_MODULES"
It appears sudo was recently changed to remove most of the user's environment before running the command.
The GTK_MODULES var was one that had been removed.
Hope this helps.

Bummer. I wonder if one or both of the following might be needed in
the root environment now:
* GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge
* Accessibility support enabled (something like: gconftool-2 --set
"/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility" --type boolean "True")

Hi everyone,

Even after updating everything on the system using apt-get and
updating orca from the 2.22 branch on SVN, the problem continues.
I see the same in Debian Lenny, too. It would appear that something
significant changed in Gnome 2.22 that the instructions given at
http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SysAdmin no longer work.
