This is correct, unfortunately I personally cannot give you any hints
but if you take this on I am sure that a lot of others would be
interested in seeing the results.
There is a listing of all the api's used in the source tarball under
docs and an example (using python) under docs.

Now that I think about it, I have some vague memories of others doing
the same thing you described on this list so you may want to search
the archives first (gmane might be the easiest).
