I agree on the idea that user pick operating system on the variety and availability of applications. It's also usually easier to advertise applications than a desktop.

The problem with the approach, though, is that one would have to advertise the Windows or Mac versions, since Linux distributions provide no common decentralized installation method. Most application developers provide no decentralized installer.

By doing so, one would increase the availability and variety of applications for Operating Systems that are not Open Source.
