After a debugging this in private with Georg he noticed that it only happens when there is a non-ASCII character in the password. I can see that that the password gets correctly passed down to soup_auth_authenticate. Lets use https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=702489 to track this further.
