Well, the point of my argument is that a "Desktop Effects" option in
GNOME cannot be used to change users window manager. GNOME itself does
not decree a particular window manager, so it cannot start changing the
running window manager based on, from the users point of view, an
completely unrelated option.
Personally, I want to see the "Desktop Effects" option just enable and
disable the compositor in Metacity. It's a shame Compiz doesn't have
such an option, or is considered too poor to run without compositing
enabled.
If Compiz users want to use Metacity when disabling desktop effects,
perhaps it would be possible to add this as an option to the Compiz
configuration somehow?
