Meanwhile, with the previous suggestions I'm back the Gnome-shell ... 
thanks.  I'd like a near-permanent solution so I'll still proceed with 
above (with more clarification).  I get errors at the terminal running 
Gnome-shell.  Hope there are no serious implications:
