Don't worry - I'm unarmed :-)

As I wrote - cold down, warm up and especially electric current
peaks, capacitors charge/discharge, ... at On/Off.

Maybe someone has Luck (like yours wife), someone not.
Even if new circuits are maybe (!!!) better then before cup years,
then it still holds
true that their lifespan is determined rather by the number of
On/Off
cycles than of the total running time.

I don't think so. Absolutely.
And I have to say - the great benefit of open software is the free
of choice.
I do not try to convince you to use S1, just please do not convince
me to use S3.

Please let me the choice.

If you are developing such commonly used SW like [gpm] (thanks great
expansion of GNOME/Ubuntu) is, then I really think, that you should
more respect other points of views. Just let us the choice, please!

Yes, it is not - so I have modified pm-utils script to add
new link to pm-action called - "pm-standby". So I use "standby" not
just as fallback of "mem", but as separate action. It works
perfectly. (I had to modify only < 10 rows.)

It is also possible to set in BIOS just "S1" instead of "S1&S3" -
then pm-suspend makes S1, but this again do not let me choose if I
want in concrete situation want S1 or S3 - and S3 I will use too -
for longer pauses it is of course better then S1.

I maybe forgot to emphasize one important thing: the problem with
[GPM] is, that it do not offer possibility of SWITCHING OFF
monitors. Even it prevents of do it manually with "xset dpms force
off" :-(
Screensaver in best case just blanks monitor - on older monitors not
very useful.
So - only power saving possibility [gmp] allows is straight Off and
this is too strong coffee. Even if you don't thing so.

S1 do if for me and in addition is saves 50W on the PC.

Not all have such computer with so advanced HW power
saving features. For them would be S1 more useful.
