It's less the journalling aspect, more the syncing.

Running noflushd helps greatly, noatime helps greatly, but you still have
the journal syncing, which doesn't help. That's a hard one to fix, because
without syncing, you're establishing a means for data loss. :-)

There are ways to go about it though, but with current technology, I'd go
for ext2, and see if we can repair the situation in the future.

[ I'm trying to keep a level head about what we can achieve on our own, and
what we should compromise on... Kernel level stuff is one area that we don't
have great expertise. At least not at the "oh, well I'll just fix that up
then" level. :-) ]
