As far as I recall, I have no "must know list before starting this
tutorial", at least no explicit one (I do have at least one comment
about needing programming ability but that's not a list).  However, may
I ask what you mean by "gnu building tools"?  I can think of a few
things that might cover:
  gcc
  make
  autoconf
  automake
  libtool
  something else?

I have various comments about each (some of which are already in the
tutorial in another location), but I'll wait until I understand more
clearly what your request is.

Yes, that is probably true.  To follow up to my previous question, let
me also ask which gnu building tools do you believe are necessary for a
beginner to learn?

a section covering these tools would be a nice addition. Such a 
section would be perfect to come before '3. Debugging'.
