Hi Philipp,

I finally found some time to try and compile gnome-panel. So far I am
on Ubuntu 13.04 and I managed to check out git master and make and
install the thing without a problem. Thank you for your comprehensive
explanation.
Sure. As I said, I also updated the wiki page
https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeFlashback .

I have a question about the following lines though, I think you got a
typo there. What you probably meant to write was:
    sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop

    sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/ <--- something
missing here?
No, it's ok to leave out the target filename (in the sense
target-of-the-command, not target-of-the-symlink).

But there were some copy&paste errors in the mail to you.
I just updated the wiki to read the following:
  sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop
/usr/share/xsessions/
(and, if you use your distribution's gnome-session:)
  sudo ln -s
/usr/local/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-flashback.session
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/

Does that make things clear ?

but that would overwrite my existing session file, or not? Can I just
name the symlink gnome-fallback2.desktop or will that break the session?
That should work. (I just uninstalled the distribution's packages here.)
Just name it "gnome-flashback.desktop" then. :-)

So after I have created the symlinks properly I just logout and login
again with the new session right? Or is is possible to just start the
newly compiled gnome-panel from the shell without loging out?

Yeah with the --replace trick. Try to do that first. But that will not
exercise the full interaction with gnome-session, so if you can, please
test both.

Cheers
  Philipp
