One could define a maildir [local] account at a path, move messages
in
and out, and then zip [or otherwise archive] that path. putting the
messages back would be as simple a extracting that archive to the
specified path. Unline MBOX [single file] maildir will let you have
a
folder hierarchy.
I'd point out that the Archive feature is built into Outlook in large
part due to Outlook's very brittle Postoffice Box architecture.
Evolution will happily keep working with hundreds of thousands of
messages in a folder; a situation in which Outlook dies hard.

Thanks for your suggestion, this does seem to offer a way to do it,
whether I am clever enough to figure out how to do it is another thing.
I will have a go at this.
