One could define a maildir [local] account at a path, move messages in
and out, and then zip [or otherwise archive] that path. putting the
messages back would be as simple a extracting that archive to the
specified path. Unline MBOX [single file] maildir will let you have a
folder hierarchy.
I'd point out that the Archive feature is built into Outlook in large
part due to Outlook's very brittle Postoffice Box architecture.
Evolution will happily keep working with hundreds of thousands of
messages in a folder; a situation in which Outlook dies hard.
