I am using Fedora 22 and it has one of the most recent version of Evolution 3.16.3
As far as I can judge, Fedora is quite stable and all packages are updated regularly, including Evolution naturally.
I don't know which is the most popular distribution, I simply like to run on which is reliable and update !
Wäre vielleicht einen Versuch wert...

Hello,
thank you very much for that reply.
Can that be true? - I'm using one of the most popular Linux distros -
and cannot find a seriously useable PIM?
I dont like Thunderbird, as I feel it not really integrates the three
major components, kdepim suffers from akonadi, and evolution cannot be
updated to a fairly recent release.
What do folks recommend? - Is Linux Mint a reasonable choice?
A little out of clou....

Hello Wolf:
The folks who control Ubuntu (Canonical) are not supporters of
evolution. All evolution versions that work with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS are
obsolete as far as the evolution developers are concerned. The only
way around that problem that I have found is to upgrade to Ubuntu
15.04 and got to the fta/gnome3 ppa and download evolution 3.16.0.
Please note, however, that there are differences in address book
format between newer versions on evolution and the older versions. I
have found that you cannot go back to 3.10.4 if you have upgraded to
3.16.0.
